Tween Photography Session in Downtown Riverside | Creative & Confident Tween Portraits

Tween/Teen

There’s something really special about this in-between stage of life. Not quite a little kid, not yet a teen—just beginning to discover who they are and what lights them up. That’s exactly why I love photographing tweens.

This tween photography session in Downtown Riverside was the perfect mix of personality, creativity, and stepping just outside of the comfort zone.

A Tween Session Full of Personality

From the moment we started, it was clear this session was going to be something special. She came in with a few of her favorite things that truly represent who she is right now—drawing, playing the electric guitar, and reading.

And honestly… that’s the magic.

These sessions aren’t about stiff poses or forced smiles. They’re about capturing who your child is in this exact moment before everything changes.

We leaned into her creativity by incorporating:

  • Her sketchbook (because she loves to draw)
  • Her electric guitar (cue the cool, confident energy)
  • Quiet, softer moments with a book in hand

Every part of this session told a piece of her story.

Exploring Downtown Riverside for the Perfect Backdrop

Shooting in Downtown Riverside gave us so much variety and texture. From urban walls to hidden corners, it created the perfect backdrop to match each of her looks and moods.

There’s something about the mix of city grit and charm that works so well for tween sessions—it feels elevated, but still fun and age-appropriate.

If you’re looking for a tween photographer in Riverside, this location is always one of my favorites because it allows us to create a full, dynamic gallery in one shoot.

Four Outfits, Four Different Sides of Her

We styled this session around four outfits that each captured a different side of her personality:

1. Rocker Tee + Teal Skirt
This look was playful but still edgy. It had personality and confidence written all over it—perfect for showing her fun, expressive side.

2. Ripped Jeans + Rocker Tee
This one leaned fully into that cool, laid-back vibe. Paired with her guitar, it gave us those effortlessly confident, slightly rebellious shots that tweens love.

3. Green Midi Dress + White Converse
This was her “step outside the comfort zone” outfit—and honestly, she owned it.
It brought out a softer, more elevated side while still feeling true to her with the Converse. And this is always my favorite part—watching them realize they can be more than one thing.

4. Jean Shorts + Black Tank
This simple outfit was perfect for her to sit on the rock and read in, showing her comfortable side.

Because they’re not just one version of themselves. None of us are.

Why Tween Sessions Matter More Than You Think

This age is often overlooked when it comes to professional photos—but it’s one of the most important.

Tweens are:

  • Building confidence
  • Discovering their identity
  • Starting to see themselves differently

A session like this isn’t just about photos. It’s about letting them feel seen, celebrated, and confident in who they are right now.

And for parents—it’s a way to freeze a moment that changes way too fast.
